SERIALIZATION OFFERED BY SANYO-VERBATIM CD COMPANY

New process uses laser to engrave alpha-numeric information on inner hub of CDs...the result is a product that is traceable and more secure from piracy

Richmond, Indiana, July 11, 1996 - SANYO-VERBATIM CD COMPANY announced today that it is able to engrave data onto the inner hub of compact discs. This serialization technique results in a more traceable product that offers more security against piracy and, for the first time, offers the opportunity for software publishers and record labels to be able to engrave unique data information on each disc. Through serialization, compact discs can now be offered in limited edition sets. "Serialization offers our customers the ability to personalize their discs," remarks Mary Campbell, Sales Administration Department Manager. "The serialization process can really characterize an individual disk to that company in a way that has been unavailable before this."

"As we all know, piracy has become a hot issue for major software companies and record labels alike," continues Campbell. "SANYO-VERBATIM CD COMPANY's ability to serialize each and every disc for our clients who select the service, enables our clients to place critical identifying information onto their discs that would prove the authenticity of the disc. Though serialization won't eliminate piracy, it's a strong step in the right direction."

SANYO-VERBATIM CD COMPANY serialization can be used in a number of different ways to suit client needs. Serialization can be comprised of 4 lines of up to 9 characters each and can even provide date and time information, if desired. A variety of different font sizes can be selected from as well. A great example of how a client might want to use serialization would be to engrave an algorithm used to access a CD-ROM title, or other information that the software publisher or record label could find invaluable. For example a firm may want the date and location of disc manufacture information on the inner hub, whereas another firm may find that having the discs counted and numbered to be of great benefit. Of course, this latter case would be of special benefit to those firms wishing to offer a limited edition title.
